Electronic noses at Cabourg’s WWTP to guarantee zero odor nuisance

The wastewater plant recently inaugurated in Cabourg is a technological marvel - a true 21st-century facility. Veolia has installed its latest purifying membrane technology within a building that blends harmoniously with its environment.

Close to the horse racetrack, the objective behind this WWTP project is to provide a zero-odor solution to the nearby residents. To accomplish this, electronic noses have been installed to alert the operator of any smell, and thus, act proactively.

The OdoWatch continuous odor monitoring platform was selected by the city. Equipped with electronic noses for the continuous measurement of odor and coupled with dynamic 3D odor plumes, OdoWatch helps to ensure zero-odor in the community around the WWTP. The two electronic noses measure odors around the clock. At the moment a strong enough smell is detected, it alerts the operators who can act proactively before the odors reach the neighbors.

Eventually, the OdoWatch technology will also help achieve the ambitious goals of this ultra-modern infrastructure: an investment of 30 million € to guarantee the quality of life of nearby residents and the purity of swimming water for the next 35 years.

The new waste water plant was built on the site of the former one, at the entrance of Cabourg, facing the racetrack. It can process wastewater from 70,000 inhabitants without producing noise or odors.

The other major innovation is co-composting: resolutely forward-looking, for the conversion of the WWTP the Community of the Dives Estuary’s districts (CCED) opted to switch from the waste sludge outbound stream to a more product-oriented approach. In fact, a co-composting unit converts sludge from wastewater treatment into compost by mixing it with green waste collected by the CCED. A WWTP and compost production operation performed at one site is a first in France.

The work was carried out by the OTV Group (Veolia Water Solutions) in partnership with the Caen-based architect Bienvenu, the civil engineering company Pinto, and Vert Latitude landscapers.
